Barrett Emerick, associate professor of philosophy, recently published “The Violence of Silencing” in the book "Pacifism, Politics, and Feminism: Intersections and Innovations," a peer-reviewed collection edited by Jennifer Kling.
In his chapter, Emerick explores and develops the concept of epistemic violence – the way in which violence might be done to someone in their capacity as a knower – and argues that silencing can be an act of epistemic violence. He also considers when and under what conditions it is appropriate to silence someone, even if doing so is an act of violence.
Assistant Professor of History Jeff Eden had a new article published in “The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Asian History” (New York: Oxford University Press, 2019).
Christine Wooley, associate dean of curriculum and associate professor of English at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, was recently appointed to the Executive Committee of the Association of Departments of English (ADE). The ADE supports academic departments focused on studying literature, writing, and culture by helping its members successfully lead and manage their programs.

Shields Elementary teacher Brennan Clarke was named the Cape Region’s 2020 District Teacher of the Year. Clarke will compete for state honors in October. Shields Elementary is located in Lewes, Delaware.
Cindy Broyles ’79 will not seek re-election from St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Board of Trustees following the 2019 academic year. The Board of Trustees voted her Board of Trustee Emerita because of her 12 years of significant and impactful service to the College. Broyles was appointed in 2007. Prior, she served on the Alumni Council from 2004-2006.
Ann L. McDaniel will not seek re-election from St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Board of Trustees following the 2019 academic year.
