Jeffrey Eden, assistant professor of history, has recently published the book, “Slavery and Empire in Central Asia” (Cambridge University Press, 2018). The book is an in-depth study of the slave trade that spurred the Russian conquest of Central Asia.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland announces the new Patuxent River Science & Technology (PRS&T) Consortium Scholarship Fund. Envisioned and championed by AMEWAS, this scholarship fund is the result of a collaboration among six local government contracting companies and aims to ensure some of Southern Maryland’s brightest students can afford college.

The St. Mary’s College of Maryland Music Department will present The Clazzical Project in a Halloween Eve concert featuring spooky classical themes and jazz renditions on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Auerbach Auditorium of St. Mary’s Hall. Highlighting music by Saint-Saens, Mozart, and others, the concert is free of charge and open to the public. Costumes are encouraged.

Linden McBride, assistant professor of economics, has been published in The World Bank Economic Review.

The St. Mary's County Arts Council will present Jennifer Cognard-Black for its November Art Share Series.  Cognard-Black will host a discussion about the cultural work of recipes and give a short reading from her anthology of the literatures of food, "Books that Cook."  

This discussion and reading is part of Leonardtown's First Friday event on Friday, Nov. 2 from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at the St. Mary's County Arts Council, 22660 Washington Street.

There will be copies of "Books that Cook" for sale at the event.

The PING  vocal ensemble under the direction of Professor Larry Vote will present a brief concert on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m. in the Reconstructed Chapel at Historic St. Mary City. The concert is free of charge and open to the public. The performance will feature music by Charles Villiers Stanford, John Tavener, Herbert Howells, and Jake Rudestat.

A state delegate and senate candidate forum in St. Mary’s County District 29 is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the College of Southern Maryland’s Leonardtown campus, Auditorium, Building A. The forum is sponsored by St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Center for the Study of Democracy, the Southern Maryland Association of Realtors, and Baynet Media. The forum is free of charge and open to the public.

The Office of the President presents Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Native American scholar and poet N. Scott Momaday on Nov. 15 at 8:15 p.m. in Daugherty-Palmer Commons on the College’s campus. The event, co-sponsored by the VOICES Reading Series and the Theater, Film, and Media Studies department, is free of charge and open to the public. 

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.’s black comedy “Happy Birthday, Wanda June” opens on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Nov. 18 in the Bruce Davis Theater, Montgomery Hall, on the St. Mary’s College of Maryland campus. Ticket prices are $4 for teachers, students, senior citizens, and Arts Alliance members; $6, general admission.
