Boucher Captures Singlehanded National Championship

 Leo Boucher ’23 claimed the Glen S. Foster Trophy for the second time in his career Sunday afternoon as the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Men’s Singlehanded National Champion. Boucher put up a 27-point victory at the two-day 2021 ICSA Men’s Singlehanded Nationals hosted by the Severn Sailing Association in conjunction with the U.S. Naval Academy.

“Leo works incredibly hard all year to be able to compete at this level. He has now become one of only five men to win this championship multiple times,” Director of Sailing Bill Ward said.

St. Mary's College of Maryland was proud to take part in A Celebration of Justice & Equity, Benjamin Hance Marker Unveiling on Monday at the Leonardtown Jail Museum. 

The marker commemorates Benjamin Hance, a young Black man from Leonardtown who is the only documented lynching victim in St. Mary's County in 1887.President Tuajuanda Jordan gave the keynote address entitled "Enlighten. Educate. Empower. - The Age of the Awakening."

Professor Williams Published in European Journal of Training and Development

Professor of Psychology Libby Nutt Williams, in collaboration with colleagues from James Madison University, the George Washington University, and Deakin University in Australia, published an article in the European Journal of Training and Development entitled "The Development and Practice of Authentic Leadership: A Cultural Lens."  The purpose of this empirical study was to explore the practice of authentic leadership and understand more about how it is cultivated and sustained.

Interim Dean of Faculty Katie Gantz and Interim Chief Diversity Officer Kelsey Bush contributed to the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges' (COPLAC) recent Scott Beard Leadership Circle, a two-day virtual professional development workshop for early- to mid-career academic affairs administrators. Gantz served as a co-organizer and facilitator of the series of intensive, problem-based workshops, and co-led a session on best practices in mentoring. Bush co-led a discussion on invisible administrative barriers to justice, diversity, equity and inclusion.

Professor Crawford Presents at the Marine Biological Laboratory and at the Society for Developmental Biology

Karen Crawford, professor of biology, recently presented research findings. In early July, Crawford presented, “Beyond Proof of Concept: CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and questions for Doryteuthis (Loligo) pealeii” to the Marine Biological Community at Woods Hole, Massachusetts, where she is also co-teaching a course on embryology. In addition, Crawford presented “New Techniques, Discoveries, & Ideas: Genetic Knockout of Pigmentation in the Squid Doryteuthis pealeii” as an invited speaker at the annual meeting of the Society for Developmental Biology.

Assistant Professor of Spanish Argelia González Hurtado has recently published in Letras Hispanas: Revista de Literatura y Cultura an article titled  “Family Ties and Affective Landscapes in 21st Century Argentinean and Mexican Cinema: El premio (2012) and Mai morire (2013).” Letras Hispanas is a peer-reviewed, open-access online journal dedicated to publishing scholarly essays that engage topics in connection with Spanish, Latin American, and US Latino literatures and cultures edited by Texas State University.

Assistant Professor Jessye McDowell's Artwork Featured in Exhibition at Gallery 115

Assistant Professor of Digital Media and Animation Jessye McDowell has two artworks included in "Bloom," a group show at Gallery 115 in Frederick, Maryland. Her new piece, "Future Sets (After Huysum)," was selected for the catalogue cover. The exhibition runs from June 18-Sept.15; there will be an opening reception on Saturday, July 10, from 7-9 p.m. There will also be a virtual artist talk on Sunday, Aug. 8, from 1-2 p.m.

Professor of Psychology Libby Nutt Williams and alumni Margaret (Meg) Marcelli ‘17, Benjamin (Ben) Ertman ‘18, and Kelly Cullota ‘18 recently published an article in the journal Adoption Quarterly. The article, "The Impact of Racial-Ethnic Socialization Practices on International Transracial Adoptee Identity Development" is based on Marcelli's SMP which was a qualitative study that explored adoptees’ perspectives on their parents’ socialization strategies and the effect of those practices on their sense of identity and ability to manage future challenges, such as racial discrimination.
