Institutional Advancement Wins Gold in CASE Awards for Sacred Journey: Re-making Our World Anew

For its work on the single-day special event “The Sacred Journey: Re-Making Our World Anew,” St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Office of Institutional Advancement won a 2022 Circle of Excellence gold award from the international Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). This is the second time in two years Institutional Advancement (IA) has been awarded in the Circle of Excellence competition; in 2020 IA earned a silver for its Giving Tuesday campaign.

Assistant Professor Sherrer Takes on a Leadership Role at the 2022 COPLAC Summer Institute

Assistant Professor of Biochemistry Shanen M. Sherrer participated in the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) Summer Institute June 9-11, 2022 at the University of North Carolina Asheville. This year’s summer institute focused on women faculty in STEM and Sherrer made notable contributions to it. Her most important contribution was co-facilitating a faculty development session on the topic of “Invisible Service” with  Wendy Pogozelski, the lead principal investigator of COPLAC’s NSF ADVANCE PLAN grant that sponsored the summer institute.

Associate Professor Troy Townsend ’07 Recognized as Maryland Outstanding Young Scientist

Associate Professor of Chemistry Troy Townsend ’07 was named a 2022 Maryland Outstanding Young Scientist by the Maryland Academy of Sciences and the Maryland Science Center. Townsend was honored at a ceremony May 11 at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

In his acceptance speech, Townsend spoke of the inspiration and support he receives from his students, his children and his community. “In these people, I have observed three key elements of a good scientist: passion, optimistic curiosity and luck.”

375 students graduate in 2022 Commencement Ceremony at St. Mary’s College of Maryland

St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the National Public Honors College, graduated 375 students with Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Master of Arts in Teaching degrees on Saturday, May 14, outdoors on the campus’ Townhouse Green.

Boucher Captures Singlehanded National Championship

 Leo Boucher ’23 claimed the Glen S. Foster Trophy for the second time in his career Sunday afternoon as the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Men’s Singlehanded National Champion. Boucher put up a 27-point victory at the two-day 2021 ICSA Men’s Singlehanded Nationals hosted by the Severn Sailing Association in conjunction with the U.S. Naval Academy.

“Leo works incredibly hard all year to be able to compete at this level. He has now become one of only five men to win this championship multiple times,” Director of Sailing Bill Ward said.

President Jordan Delivers Keynote at Benjamin Hance Marker Unveiling

St. Mary's College of Maryland was proud to take part in A Celebration of Justice & Equity, Benjamin Hance Marker Unveiling on Monday at the Leonardtown Jail Museum. 

The marker commemorates Benjamin Hance, a young Black man from Leonardtown who is the only documented lynching victim in St. Mary's County in 1887.President Tuajuanda Jordan gave the keynote address entitled "Enlighten. Educate. Empower. - The Age of the Awakening."

Professor Williams Published in European Journal of Training and Development

Professor of Psychology Libby Nutt Williams, in collaboration with colleagues from James Madison University, the George Washington University, and Deakin University in Australia, published an article in the European Journal of Training and Development entitled "The Development and Practice of Authentic Leadership: A Cultural Lens."  The purpose of this empirical study was to explore the practice of authentic leadership and understand more about how it is cultivated and sustained.
