St. Mary's College Students Record 750+ Species of Local Flora and Fauna in Citizen Science Effort

What is sharing our immediate environment?  This simple question has led Coastal Ecology students working with Seabird McKeon, visiting professor of biology, to document more than 750 species of animals, plants, and fungus on campus and in the surrounding area in the fall semester. 

According to McKeon, “Our ability to understand the ecology of an area starts with understanding what species are here. And the only way to do that is to go outside and look- but I didn’t expect my students to find more than 700 species!”

7th Annual Hawk Nest Competition

On November 29, 2018 in Cole Cinema, four student teams presented their business models to a panel of business expert judges (Peg Duchesne ’77, Bill Fry, Gary Jobson, David Lewis, Owen Lewis) in the 7th Annual Hawk Nest Competition: the endpoint in the semester-long class on entrepreneurship taught by Professor of Sociology Elizabeth Osborn.

St. Mary’s College Recognized by The Student Loan Report

St. Mary's College of Maryland has been recognized by The Student Loan Report for creating an environment in which graduates can leave campus with a limited amount of student loan debt. Specifically, St. Mary's College ranked #1 when it came to lowest student debt figures in the state of Maryland.

15th Annual Southern Maryland Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast, Jan. 21

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the 15th Annual Southern Maryland Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast on Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. The theme of the day is “All Life is Interconnected.” The breakfast will begin at 6:30 a.m. and costs $10 payable at the door. The program will begin at 8 a.m.

SMCM students in the Women in Science House (WiSH) hosted Math Girls Day

On Saturday, November 17, St. Mary's College students in the Women in Science House (WiSH) hosted Math Girls Day at the College. Math Girls Day runs every semester for middle school girls from Esperanza and Spring Ridge Middle Schools. This year, 48 girls partook in math-related activities and workshops, and enjoyed a lecture by guest speaker Susan Goldstine, professor of mathematics, and had lunch in the Great Room.

President Tuajuanda C. Jordan Named a 2018 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science

St. Mary’s College of Maryland President Tuajuanda C. Jordan has been named a 2018 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.
