In a special presentation on Friday, October 18, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Board of Trustees recognized the following faculty promotions.
Promotion to Full Professor:
Betül Başaran (religious studies) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2005. She is a scholar of the Ottoman Empire as well as the social and economic history of the Middle East and women in the Muslim world. She led an NEH-funded seminar on the Ottoman Empire in 2016 and was recently a Folger Institute Fellow in Washington, D.C.
Todd E. Eberly (political science) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2007. He teaches classes in American government and Maryland politics. The author of four books, Eberly was named one of the most influential voices in Maryland politics by Campaigns and Elections magazine.
Joshua M. Grossman (physics) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2007. His research specialties are atomic physics, quantum information and physics education. He has earned multiple research grants through the Office of Naval Research.
Charles D. Musgrove (history) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2007. He teaches classes in Chinese, Japanese and East Asian history. He is author of a book on China in the 1930s and earned a Fulbright grant for research in Taiwan during 2013-2014.
Reappointment with Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor:
Katherine A. Koch (educational studies) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2013. She teaches courses in special education, learning disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders.
Michelle L. Milne (physics) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2013. She teaches courses in the applied physics concentration as well as introductory physics. Her specialty is ultrasonic research on anisotropic tissues.
Kelly Y. Neiles (biochemistry and chemistry) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2013. She specializes in chemistry education and teaches general and contemporary chemistry. She earned her PhD at The Catholic University of America.
Kent D. Randell (librarian) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2013. He serves as the College archivist and teaches “Introduction to Archives and Information Science.”
Antonio Ugues Jr. (political science) joined the St. Mary’s College faculty in 2013. His research interests include democracy, electoral systems and electoral integrity. He also directs the Center for the Study of Democracy.
The Board also appointed Katsunori Mita as professor emeritus of physics and Gail L. Savage as professor emerita of history.
