On February 1, 2020, the Board of Trustees of St.

Karen Crawford, professor of biology, has recently been awarded a Whitman Fellowship from the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL). The award will be used to cover laboratory space and housing at MBL in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. Crawford will use the award to continue her sabbatical research project investigating the use of CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to knockout specific gene functions in developing embryos.

The Office of the President presents “Nurturing the Compassionate Community: An Evening to Honor the Legacy of Lucille Clifton” on Saturday, February 29 at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) in Auerbach Auditorium of St. Mary’s Hall. The event, co-sponsored by the VOICES Reading Series, is free of charge and open to the public.  The evening will feature poetry readings and reflections to honor St.

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, from 4:45 – 6 p.m., Professor Carys Mitchelmore, University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, will discuss aquatic toxicology and coral reefs. Her lecture, titled “Are Sunscreens Killing Our Coral Reefs?” takes place in Schaefer Hall, room 106 on the St. Mary’s College of Maryland campus.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Board of Trustees approved a new test optional admissions policy on Saturday, February 1, 2020. This means first-year applicants seeking admission to the College beginning in the fall of 2021 may choose whether or not to provide standardized testing (SAT or ACT scores) as part of the admission application process.
