SMCM Student Connects Physics and Drones with Anthropology During Internship at UMD UAS Test Site
Using drone technology, Luke Quinn ‘20 spent his summer researching a way to more efficiently survey archaeology sites for magnetic anomalies.
Through an internship with the University of Maryland Unmanned Aerial Systems Test Site (UMD UAS), Quinn, a St. Mary’s College of Maryland physics major with a concentration in applied physics, researched the feasibility of attaching a magnetometer to an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), commonly referred to as a drone, to survey archaeology sites.

David Froom's Newest Publications
David Froom's "Variations on an Early American Hymn Tune" for solo piano and "Warm are the still and lucky miles" for chorus have just been published by American Composers Edition. The former of these was premiered by Eliza Garth on August 30 at the Piano Festival on the River, the annual celebration of pianists and piano music held each year on the St. Mary's College of Maryland campus.
Hautanen Presents at Maryland Higher Education Roundtable Meeting
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, David Hautanen, vice president for enrollment management at St. Mary’s College, presented at the Maryland Higher Education Roundtable meeting hosted by the College Board at the College Park Marriott and Conference Center in Hyattsville, Maryland. Hautanen presented and facilitated a discussion on the future of enrollment management leadership.
Howansky Named 2019 recipient of the Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award
Kristina Howansky, assistant professor of psychology at St. Mary’s College, has been named the 2019 recipient of the Wilbert J. McKeachie Teaching Excellence Award from the Society for the Teaching of Psychology during the 40th anniversary of its annual Conference on Teaching, which took place in Denver, Colorado.
Malena Selected as Regional Scholar for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Society of Biblical Literature
Assistant Professor of History Sarah Malena has been selected as the Regional Scholar for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Society of Biblical Literature for this academic year. This achievement also qualifies Malena for consideration to receive the Regional Scholar Award at the national level.
Professor Silberschlag Conducts St. Ann Festival Orchestra
On Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 7 p.m., Professor of Music Jeffrey Silberschlag will conduct the St. Ann Festival Orchestra in Washington, D.C., for a performance of Joseph Jongen's thrilling Symphonie Concertante. The program also includes a performance by Christopher Houlihan, and solo organ works by Saint-Saëns, J.S. Bach, and more.
