Assistant Professor of Photography Tristan Cai recently participated in an artist-in-residence program at DECK, a premier arts space in Singapore that showcases contemporary photography. DECK’s mission is to support and nurture the community of photography enthusiasts in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
The residency award included a dedicated artist studio space from December 2018 through April 2019, a research stipend and production grant, as well as a sponsorship of a solo exhibition.
Cai conducted research on slavery and indentured servitude in Singapore, a history which has been erased from Singapore's mainstream historical account. The exhibition “The Aesthetics of Disappearance,” which runs April 4 through May 10, 2019, has been very well received and featured in a story which ran in The Straits Times, Singapore's main newspaper in both print and online.
