Associate Professor Tristan Cai, of the Department of Art presented a newly commissioned body of work titled "Echoes of Resistance" at the Sun Valley Museum of Art in Ketchum, Idaho. The project is part of the museum’s upcoming group exhibition, "Uncharted: Artists as Wayfinders," curated by Courtney Gilbert.
The exhibition, which ran from April 11 to July 5, 2025, is the first installment of a three-part series that explores journeys past, present and future through the lenses of mapping, mending and memory. With a particular focus on movement to and within the Americas, "Uncharted" engages with timely issues such as migration, climate change and the impact of global events, including pandemics. The series asks: How have migration stories shaped our past and present? And how might future population shifts unfold in response to environmental and societal changes?
In "Echoes of Resistance," Cai examines the evolving nature of protest, migration and identity through conceptual photographic installations that weave together historical and contemporary narratives focusing on the trans-Pacific movement of laborers. His work offers critical insights into how communities navigate displacement and adaptation, outside of dominant geopolitical frameworks.
