St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Institutional Advancement office has won the top Grand Award in the 32nd Annual APEX Awards for Publication Excellence for the BeCounted on Giving Tuesday Fundraising Campaign. The office received the Grand Award in the Campaigns, Programs & Plans category of the competition.
Assistant Professor of Psychology at St. Mary's College of Maryland Gili Freedman and colleague Jennifer Beer (University of Texas at Austin) recently received a collaborative, three-year grant from the National Science Foundation for a total of $465,222 ($75,102 of which will go to SMCM).
St. Mary’s College of Maryland Assistant Professor of Chemistry Daniel Chase was recently awarded a three-year, $70,000 grant from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund.

St. Mary's College Professor of Music David Froom's "Shades of Red" for solo viola has just been released as part of the American Composer Alliance's "The Shelter Recordings," an initiative created to support musicians sheltering in place while awaiting the return of live performing. Froom's music was selected and recorded by Rita Porfiris, professor of viola at the Hartt School of Music. The recording (a video) and a description of Porfiris is available here:
St. Mary’s College of Maryland President Tuajuanda C. Jordan has been appointed board chair to the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) board of directors.
St. Mary’s College of Maryland announced Wednesday, July 15, that fall 2020 varsity athletics and club sports competition will be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The recommendation was made by President Tuajuanda C. Jordan and approved by the Board of Trustees during a special Board meeting held today.
Lee Capristo, director of publications in St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Institutional Advancement/Integrated Marketing office, recently won an Award of Excellence in the 32nd Annual APEX Awards for Publication Excellence Competition. The award recognized the writing of the editor’s note column in the Mulberry Tree magazine over three issues published during 2019-2020.
Brian A. Sharpless, visiting associate professor of psychology, recently published an article in the journal Sleep Medicine with several colleagues from the U.S. and the U.K. The article, “Exploding Head Syndrome: Clinical Features, Theories about Etiology, and Prevention Strategies in a Large International Sample,” was based on data from over 6,000 participants. It was carried out through the British Broadcasting Corporation’s Science Focus Magazine.
