Officer Katie Ringdahl Selected as Public Safety Officer of the Year

The Office of Public Safety is pleased to announce that Public Safety Officer Katie Ringdahl has been selected as our Officer of the Year for 2024.

Officer Ringdahl started her career with the Office of Public Safety in 2021. Officer Ringdahl possesses a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland Global Campus and an Associate of Arts in Social Sciences from the College of Southern Maryland. Officer Ringdahl is a Certified Instructor for RAD Self Defense and ALERRT Civilian Response to an Active Shooter.

JED Campus SMCM Update – Spring 2024

SMCM joined with the JED Foundation in 2022 to ensure we are promoting health and wellness on our campus. The JED Foundation is a nonprofit organization that partners with colleges to strengthen their mental health, substance abuse, and suicide prevention programs and systems. We are now completing Year 1 (of 3) for implementing changes to help strengthen our support for student mental health and wellbeing.

SMCM Selected to Receive the IIE American Passport Project Grant

St. Mary's College of Maryland has been selected by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to receive an IIE American Passport Project grant that will enable up to 25 SMCM students to obtain their first U.S. passport and open the pathway to study abroad. Through support from IDEAA, the grant will be matched allowing a total of 50 students to obtain their passports.

Professor Mertz Presents at Discover BMB and Serves on an Invited Panel

Pamela Mertz, professor of biochemistry, was a co-author on 4 posters presented at Discover BMB in San Antonio.  She presented with two faculty from other institutions on “Lessons Learned from the First Implementation of Malate Dehydrogenase CUREs in Biochemistry, Biology, and Chemistry Lab Courses.” Two other posters were on assessment of biomolecular visualization, “Validation of Biomolecular Visualization Assessments through Large Scale Field Testing and Student Focus Groups” and “A Tale of Two Perspectives: Comparing Student and Faculty Perceptions of Biomolecular Visualization Ass

United States Rep. Steny Hoyer to Deliver St. Mary's College of Maryland's 2024 Commencement Address

Maryland’s longest-serving member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD 5th) will deliver the keynote address during St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s 2024 Commencement. The commencement ceremony will take place Saturday, May 11 beginning at 10 a.m. on the College’s Townhouse Green.

Professor Williams and Katya Scott '24 Publish Systematic Review in The Arts in Psychotherapy

Senior psychology major Katya Scott '24 and Professor of Psychology Libby Williams were recently published in the journal The Arts in Psychotherapy. The article is based on Scott's summer 2022 SURF project: A Systematic Review of Qualitative Studies on Art Therapy with Adult Refugees. Katya's St. Mary's Project, a mixed methods pilot study of art therapy with adult Ukrainian refugees, is an outgrowth of her SURF project.
