Associate Professor of History Garrey Dennie is an invited panelist on March 24 for a special edition of “A Chat with the OAS,” a virtual, live event organized by the Organization of American States (OAS) as part of the VI Inter-American Week for People of African Descent in the Americas. Established in 2018, the Inter-American Week for People of African Descent in the Americas has as its mission to foster reflection on the socio-economic issues faced by people of African descent as well as to laud their contributions to the development of the Americas.

Associate Professor of History Garrey Dennie delivered the keynote address on day two of the 10th International Garifuna Conference held March 9-11 in the Caribbean nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Organized by the Garifuna Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the University of the West Indies Open Campus, the conference theme was “From Reaction to Action: Challenges and Opportunities for Promoting Reparatory Justice for Indigenous Peoples.”

Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Pam Mertz Named a 2023 Fellow of the ASBMB

Pam Mertz, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, has been named a 2023 fellow of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). According to the ASBMB website, the honor is given to members “with a history of exceptional and sustained service to the society as well as a distinguished record of professional accomplishment to advance molecular life sciences in the fields of scientific research, diversity and inclusion, education, outreach, mentorship, leadership and/or public service.” This is the third year that ASBMB has named fellows to its society.

Angélique Kidjo to Deliver 2023 Commencement Address

International superstar and goodwill ambassador Angélique Kidjo will be the 2023 Commencement speaker at St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, May 13, 2023. The Commencement ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on the College's Townhouse Green in St. Mary's City. The five-time Grammy winner will perform in concert at the Nancy R. & Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center on the campus later that evening, beginning at 7 p.m.
