SMCM Employees Share Black Literature, Life Experience with Local Students

By sharing both passages from books and pieces of life experiences, five members of St. Mary’s College of Maryland faculty and staff inspired students at Great Mills High School during the African American Read-In on Friday, Feb. 9.

Volunteer readers from the St. Mary’s County community visited classes and read from Black authors' literature that holds special importance to them. Volunteers throughout the day also spoke with students about their respective journeys in life, education and career.

Julia King Named to the George B. and Willma Reeves Endowed Chair in the Liberal Arts

Julia King, professor of anthropology, was named to the George B. and Willma Reeves Endowed Chair in the Liberal Arts in recognition of her numerous accomplishments as a full-time professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. King’s term took effect at the start of the spring 2024 semester and runs through May 31, 2026. 

Established in 1997, the  Reeves Endowed Chair in the Liberal Arts recognizes “a distinguished scholar with broad expertise …  an eminent scholar and gifted teacher who provides academic leadership.”

Three SMCM Graduates Named Fulbright Semi-Finalists

Recent St. Mary's College of Maryland graduates Charlotte Mac Kay '22, Surisitee Motiram '23 and Nicholas Howard '23 have been named semi-finalists in the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program by the U.S. Department of State. The program "offers unparalleled opportunities in all academic disciplines to passionate and accomplished graduating college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals from all backgrounds."

St. Mary's College of Maryland Board of Trustees Notes Progress on Strategic Plan

The St. Mary's College of Maryland Board of Trustees reviewed significant progress made by the College as implementation of the 2023-2026 strategic plan got underway. The Board also approved $1.66 million in Plant Fund Capital Budget projects to be completed over the summer and several other items.

Assoc. Professor González Hurtado Co-Edits Journal

Argelia González Hurtado, associate professor of Spanish, is co-editor of a dossier for the online academic journal Cuadernos del CILHA of the Interdisciplinary Center for Hispanic America Literature of the National University of Cuyo in Argentina.
