Associate Professor of Psychology Scott Mirabile and collaborators from the University of Puget Sound and Montana State University recently published an article titled “Development and adaptation of the Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire for adolescents" in the Journal of Adolescence.

The researchers adapted an existing measure of emotion regulation in children for use in adolescents by expanding the kinds of strategies assessed (e.g., cultural and spiritual forms of coping) and by including the regulation of positive emotions. Using varied qualitative methods (expert consultation, cognitive interviewing, and top-down and bottom-up coding), the research team found that adolescents provided unique and valuable insights beyond those provided by expert consultants; and the results supported the content validity of the adapted measure.
