Associate Professor González Hurtado and Assistant Professor Ortega Participate in a Colloquium on Cinematic Mothers in Latin American Cultures.

Argelia González Hurtado (associate professor of Spanish) and Jeannine Ortega (assistant professor of English) participated in a colloquium in July focused on “Cinematic Mothers: Mothering and Motherhood in Contemporary Latin American Cultures.” This four-day event brought together scholars from universities in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada (StFX).

During the colloquium, González Hurtado presented on the cinematic representation of rural mothers in Mexico. At the same time, Ortega discussed a film that explores topics of motherhood, migration and Latinx culture. The event was co-organized by González Hurtado, María Soledad Paz-Mackay of StFX and Omar Rodriguez from the University of Lethbridge. It was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada; the SSHRC Connections Grant; the three partnering universities; and the Asociación de Hispanistas y Latinoamericanistas de las Provincias del Atlántico (AHLPA).

Participants presented research on various themes related to the portrayal of mothering in films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Venezuela and the United States. The outcomes will be published as an edited volume and accompanied by a collection of video essays on the films analyzed in the book.
