St. Mary’s College Professor of History Charles Holden published two articles over the 2017-18 academic year. “Prominent Men Badly Beaten: The Baltimore Pro-War Riot of 1917,” was published in the Fall/Winter 2018 issue of Maryland Historical Magazine. The article describes a riot that broke out in Baltimore in April 1917 as the U.S. entered World War I. The unrest highlighted a contentious debate between those who, even in a time of war, defended First Amendment rights to dissent and those who pushed a narrower, more reactionary brand of American nationalism.
“Manliness and the Culture of Self-Improvement: The University of North Carolina in the 1890s-1900s,” was published in the February 2018 issue of History of Higher Education Quarterly. That article looks at the inclusion of the development of masculinity as a core principle of UNC’s rise as a modern university in the 1890s and early 1900s. Surprisingly, university leaders did not insist on any particular model of masculinity for their nearly all-male student body. Rather, they encouraged students to combine Victorian manhood with a newer emphasis on physical strength.
