Sarah Latchney, assistant professor of neurobiology, has recently been published in Behavioural Brain Research titled, “Indices of dentate gyrus neurogenesis are unaffected immediately after or following withdrawal from morphine self-administration compared to saline self-administering control male rats.”
In this article, Latchney and colleagues examined changes in specific brain regions following exposure to the opiate morphine. Opiates like morphine have a high-abuse potential and if used chronically can alter cognition. This research investigates immediate effects of morphine use and effects following morphine withdrawal to increase understanding of the long-term effects of chronic opiate use.
