In this hands-on workshop led by Art Department faculty, participants will transform personal photographs into expressive scratchboard artworks inspired by the poetry collection and art in Kin: Rooted in Hope. Scratchboard is a unique medium where artists etch into a black-inked surface to reveal the white layer beneath, creating high-contrast images rich in texture and detail.

We invite you to bring photographs connected to your family and heritage—these could include family portraits, images of your childhood home, sentimental objects, or landscapes and land that hold meaning for you. Using these images as inspiration, you will create artwork that honors what came before, as Weatherford does in Kin: Rooted in Hope.

No previous art experience is necessary—all materials will be provided. Light refreshments served.

The workshop will be led at Art Department faculty and is sponsored by the Office of Community Outreach & Engagement.
