Jazz Roads: An Elevation Band Masterclass, Feb. 21

Intended Audience

Band Description:
Danny Janklow + Elevation Band bridges the traditions of Jazz and all its language with the influences of Soul, Funk, Bossa, and the emerging genres of today.
We believe that music has the power to bring people together and to tell stories that go deeper than language. We're fortunate to have some of the brightest musicians in LA on our team. Danny Janklow + Elevation Band features Jonathan Pinson on drums, Jermaine Paul on bass, Dennis Hamm (of Thundercat) on keys, Katherine Ella Wood on vocals, and myself on saxophones/flute.
Masterclass Description:
My Masterclasses at Temple University, Cal State University of Northridge, Stanford University, ect. have been focused on the performance aspect of studying jazz music. I usually perform a short piece of music ("Take the A Train" by Duke Ellington) and then talk about how I approach the melody, harmony, and rhythm of playing this song. In addition, we'll talk about the most important element of jazz, which is improvisation. We'll talk about how to train your ears to hear deeper harmonies and stronger melodies and how to practice to achieve technique on your instrument. The goal is to consistently project your authentic creative ideas through your instrument. I usually have students come and perform a few tunes with me and give my feedback to them. We'll then end with a 15 minute Q&A where I will answer questions from the students.
