Professor Julia King discusses the relations between the early English settlers of Maryland and the Indigenous Peoples. In March 1634, English settlers landed at St. Clements Island, a story all Marylanders know. But why did the colonists choose St. Clement's Island as their initial beachhead? Archaeology is revealing the presence of large, well-populated Indigenous towns all along this portion of the Potomac River and west, many with histories dating back centuries and even millennia.
