As a reporter who was the first Latina in many newsrooms, Pulitzer Prize winner Maria Hinojosa dreamt of a space where she could create independent, multimedia journalism that explores and gives a critical voice to the diverse American experience. To that end, in 2010, she created the Futuro Media Group, an independent, nonprofit organization based in Harlem, NYC with the mission to create multimedia content for and about the new American mainstream in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world.
Hinojosa is the Anchor and Executive Producer of the Peabody Award-winning show Latino USA, distributed by PRX, as well as Co-Host of In The Thick, Futuro Media’s award-winning political podcast. She is also a contributor to the long-running, award-winning news program CBS Sunday Morning and a frequent guest on MSNBC.
Hinojosa’s nearly 30-year career as an award-winning journalist includes reporting for PBS, CBS, WNBC, CNN, NPR, and anchoring the Emmy Award winning talk show from WGBH Maria Hinojosa: One-on-One. She is the author of two books and has won dozens of awards, including four Emmys, the John Chancellor Award, the Studs Terkel Community Media Award, two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club, and the Ruben Salazar Lifetime Achievement Award from the NAHJ.
About the Gwen Ifill Lecture Series
The Gwen Ifill Lecture Series is a lecture series dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late Gwen Ifill. As a journalist, television newscaster, and author, Ms. Ifill notably was the first African American woman to host a nationally televised U.S. public affairs program and was also a political analyst who moderated the 2004 and 2008 vice-presidential debates. The new lecture series, modeled after her belief that a robust, independent media is critical to a democratic society, will focus on ethnically diverse individuals who have made significant contributions to the social and political landscape through work in journalism and media.
The Gwen Ifill Lecture Series speakers not only address the campus community and community at large, but also spend time while on campus interacting with our students. This exchange will aim to help students, particularly from communities of color and/or first-generation populations, understand how they can leverage their liberal arts education and strive for careers in journalism or media.
The College community anticipates benefitting from learning about the experiences of the lecture speakers, as journalists, analysts, and commentators on politics and society, especially their thoughts on race in America. At a time when discussion of social justice and racial equity have come to the forefront, the College is eager to learn about our speaker’s dedication and unwavering willingness to pursue facts and share them as a critical service to the public.
