Intended Audience
Plan now to attend one of the Music Department's first live performances of the year in the newly constructed outdoor pavilion at HSMC. The concert, which is free and open to the public will take place on Saturday, October 24, at 3 p.m. Limited seating will be available. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn seating which can be used around the perimeter of the Pavilion. The concert, under the direction of Professor of Music, Larry Vote, will include performances by the Women's Ensemble, the PING Ensemble and the featured piece, accompanied by SMCM Orchestra members, "Requiem" by Gabriel Faure. Featured soloist will be James Rogers, baritone.
Another special aspect of the program will be the premier by the PING Ensemble of Judith Shatin's setting of "La Frontera" (The Border), with words by an anonymous, undocumented immigrant youth imprisoned in an American maximum security detention center. The poem was an outcome of special poetry workshops for immigrant youths in detention which resulted in the book, Dreaming America. The selection will be accompanied on the piano by Rie Moore.
