Chinese Language & Asian Studies Chinatown/Smithsonian Trip

One of the fall traditions of the Chinese Language and Asian Studies programs is a cultural outing to D.C.’s Chinatown and the Smithsonian’s Freer Gallery of Asian Art, which specializes in Asian art and historical artifacts. In Chinatown, students experience a unique Chinese culinary practice called dim sum, which is a special kind of brunch food consisting of savory dumplings and tea. Dim sum in Chinatown is served in a traditional style using special carts and particular dishes that are not available at typical Chinese restaurants. After brunch, the group checks out the display of Asian art and historical artifacts at the Freer Gallery, which has fantastic standing collection from across the continent along with impressive special exhibitions that make each trip a unique sensory experience.
