Associate Professor of Psychology Ayşe Ikizler ‘07 co-authored a chapter on intersectionality in the text Multicultural Issues in Counseling and Therapy: Global Perspectives, along with former SMCM Visiting Professor of Psychology Maria Kalantzis and Counseling Psychology PhD Student at Indiana University Bloomington Öykü Altıntaş-Atay. The book was first published in February of this year and was recently translated into Turkish. The vision for the book was that it would be used internationally, with an emphasis on Turkish contexts.

Additionally, she and other colleagues from the American-Arab, Middle Eastern and North African Psychological Association (AMENA-Psy) published a journal article, entitled “Invisible minority: Middle Eastern and North African graduate students’ experiences in psychology programs,” in the journal Training and Education in Professional Psychology. Ikizler and her colleagues Emily El-Oqlah, Ph.D., and Bahaur Amini, Ph.D., began this project immediately pre-pandemic with AMENA-Psy mentees who were graduate students at the time, and are now practicing psychologists in California. Over the years, the team was graced with research assistance from SMCM alumni Izzy Lott ’21, Anna Kronheim ’20 and Rachel Lansbury ’22. Ikizler, former president of AMENA-Psy, says of the project, “It was a labor of love and I am so happy it's finally out in the world.”
