St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s first academic honor society, awarded book prizes to five local high school scholars on November 14. The annual event is in its twenty-first year and recognizes academic achievement by a high school senior from each of the county’s five high schools.

Katy Arnett, professor of educational studies and president of the Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, hosted the award ceremony. Laraine Glidden, distinguished professor emerita of psychology and human development, presented the awards. Students and their families as well as high school honor society advisers and principals were invited to the ceremony, where students each were presented with two books selected by Glidden on topics related to their proposed career paths.
