Dr. Milligan is a professor of professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest School of Medicine. The overarching questions in the Milligan laboratory are: The overarching questions we address in the laboratory are:  What happens when neurons become dysfunctional and eventually degenerate?  How do surrounding cells respond and how does this response promote or inhibit further neuronal function and promote pathology?  We are particularly focused on these mechanisms in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) where the average patient dies within 2-4 years of diagnosis.  We are investigating the role of interleukin 6 (IL6) trans-signaling in ALS patients and have developed two unique mouse models to fully interrogate how trans-signaling affects disease progression in ALS.  Understanding underlying disease pathological processes is critical for developing effective therapeutic strategies.
