"Safety and Sovereignty:  The Story of Violence Against Native Women and Two-Spirit (LGBTQ+) People"

In this lecture, Justice Sarah Deer will explore the connection between settler colonialism and violence against Native people. Participants will learn about the history of domestic violence and sexual assault in tribal communities. Deer will also cover the latest changes to Federal Indian law and how they relate to safety and sovereignty.

The Margaret Brent Lecture series was established in 1981 to honor "distinguished public service” among women. On the occasion of the lecture, the speaker is inducted into the Order of Margaret Brent and presented with the College medallion.
