National First-Generation Day is a call to celebrate students, faculty, and staff who are or will be the first generation of their families to complete a four-year undergraduate degree. This means first-generation students come from families where their biological parents did not complete a four-year college degree. November 8 was identified as the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965.
St. Mary's College of Maryland proudly supports the experiences of First-Generation Students through many initiatives, including Sum primus, the DeSousa-Brent Scholars, and Landers Scholars. Over 20% of SMCM students are in the first generation of their family to earn a Bachelor's Degree.
The Office of Equity Programming will celebrate all First-Gen members of our community from November 6 to November 8th. More details will follow.
