Captain of the Maryland Dove, Historic St. Mary's City
Hometown
Mechanicsville, MD
"Through my education at St. Mary's College and my experiential learning with Historic St. Mary's City, I grew into a young woman with strong abilities to observe, research, adapt and problem solve. These skills led to my ability to grow and react as a mariner to a variety of goals and conditions in shipboard life."
Angela Laaro assumed command of the Maryland Dove, a replica of the 17th-century English trading ship that helped bring the first colonists to Maryland, in the summer of 2024. A St. Mary's County native, she began volunteering at Historic St. Mary's City at the age of 14, and continued through her time as a student at SMCM. After captaining a variety of craft in the Virgin Islands, Great Lakes and Baltimore, she returned home to oversee this important role in preserving and maintaining the history of Maryland's first colonial capital.
