St. Mary’s College of Maryland has been recognized for its committed implementation of high-impact educational practices, earning its title as one of the nation’s Colleges of Distinction.
Colleges of Distinction’s selection process consists of a review of each institution’s freshman experience and retention efforts alongside its general education programs, alumni success, student satisfaction, and more. Schools are accepted on the basis that they adhere to the Four Distinctions: engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community, and successful outcomes.
As the National Public Honors College, and one of only two public honors colleges in the country, St. Mary’s College has proven itself to be at the forefront of American higher education with a modern, student-centered approach to teaching. The College also received a College of Distinction Career Development badge for the College’s emphasis on student research. From the College of Distinction website: “At St. Mary’s College, many students earn academic credit doing individual research and independent study projects in collaboration with a faculty member. First- and second-year students often join ongoing projects, and advanced students get the added benefit of pursuing their interest under the mentorship of a favorite professor. St. Mary’s College’s small size affords students the opportunity to play a significant role in the design and execution of research projects.”
St. Mary’s College’s athletics and study abroad programs were also highlighted. According to College of Distinction: “St. Mary’s College designs unique international programs that truly explore other cultures.”
