Historically Speaking event

Every Man Is His Own Historian: Civil War Diaries of Two Opposing Soldiers.

Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 7:00 PM in Cole Cinema

Please join us for a Historically Speaking event on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 7:00 PM in Cole Cinema. This program is hosted by the Center for the Study of Democracy in partnership with the St. Mary’s County Historical Society.

Professor Mary Hall (History and Political Science) will present her talk, Every Man Is His Own Historian: Civil War Diaries of Two Opposing Soldiers. Drawing on her book, From a Yankee to a Rebel Diary: The Collective Civil War Diaries of Private George Washington Hall, 14th Georgia Infantry, and Private Jacob L. Elsesser, 9th Pennsylvania Reserves, her lecture offers a compelling look at the Civil War through the personal writings of soldiers on opposing sides.

We are proud to support Professor Hall’s work and encourage you to share this valuable opportunity with your students. The event will be especially relevant for those studying history, political science, English, and related fields. We also hope you’ll join us in supporting our faculty by attending.
