Congratulations to Gretchen Phillips, March winner for the Seahawk Spirit Award!
Gretchen works in the SMCM Communications & Marketing department and was nominated under the St. Mary's Way Award category.

"St. Mary's Way Award - This past year, I witnessed multiple moments that perfectly captures why Gretchen Phillips embodies the true spirit of our institution. During a particularly challenging week marked by unexpected staffing shortages and several high‑priority communications that needed rapid turnaround, Gretchen stepped in without hesitation. Not only did she shoulder the full workload to ensure our campus communications continued seamlessly, but she did so with her characteristic accuracy, patience, and attention to detail.
What stands out the most was that, despite the immense pressure, Gretchen still found time to lift spirits across campus in a way only she can, by stepping into the role of Solomon, our beloved mascot. Gretchen consistently goes far beyond her formal responsibilities. She ensures every communication is thoughtfully crafted, clear, and complete, often catching critical details others might miss. When unexpected needs arise, she is the first to step forward, making sure nothing slips through the cracks and that the campus remains informed, supported, and connected. This incident, among many others, demonstrates why Gretchen deserves this Spirit Award. She brings dedication, joy, and an unwavering commitment to our institution, lifting both the quality of our work and the morale of our community. She doesn’t just support campus spirit, she embodies it."
As the monthly winner, Gretchen will receive 5 meal tickets to the Great Room and a certificate of appreciation.
