Human Subjects Research Reminders for Fall 2025

Now that the semester is underway and faculty and students alike may be getting their research projects started, the Institutional Review Board (IRB) wanted to remind everyone of a few human subjects considerations.

  • The St. Mary’s College Institutional Review Board continues to operate following two guidelines for the review of research involving human subjects conducted at St. Mary’s College, or conducted by St. Mary’s College faculty or professional staff: a) All research involving human subjects must receive an ethics review by the IRB if the subjects are being recruited from outside the instructor’s classroom and the research project is not an in-class demonstration, and b) An evaluation of the ethics involved in in-class research demonstrations and experiments remains entrusted with the individual instructor.
  • IRB guidelines apply to student projects, including St. Mary’s Projects.
  • All e-mail regarding the IRB, including the submission of IRB proposals, should be sent to our e-mail address: irb@smcm.edu.  Any changes, even minor ones, to a research protocol that is approved must be resubmitted for review.
  • The most current version of the IRB proposal forms are always available at the Forms page of our website.  This includes the submission forms, instructions to help you or your students submit an IRB proposal, model consent forms for in-person studies, online studies, and studies that require parent consent. Answers to many frequently asked questions also exist on the IRB website.
  • St. Mary’s policies and procedures regarding scientific misconduct are available here.

We are also currently looking for new members of the board! If you have any interest in joining the review team for the IRB (an important service to the College!), contact David Morris (dbmorris@smcm.edu) for more information. Becoming a reviewer involves a short training and after that involves reviewing approximately 1 proposal per week electronically, so the time commitment is minimal and flexible!

Best wishes for your research this term!
