Join us for another Natural Science and Mathematics Colloquium talk of the fall semester!
Wednesday, September 24, 2025.
Schaefer Hall 106 @ 4:45 p.m.
Matt Breece, a 2005 alumnus of our college , is a marine biologist with a background in biology and economics. His work focuses on using cutting-edge technologies like acoustic telemetry, satellite remote sensing, and underwater robotics to understand, forecast, and communicate the environmental factors that affect imperiled fish populations. His ultimate research goals include providing coastal water users with the information needed to reduce their impact on aquatic resources.
Seminar Title: Search for the Missing: Using Autonomous Underwater Vehicles to Find Americans Missing in Action
Abstract: There are more than 72,000 Missing in Action service members from WWII, many of whom were lost at sea in aircraft. Using knowledge from historical archives, advanced robotics outfitted with high-resolution sidescan sonar, and underwater archeology we search for and document downed aircraft to find these servicemembers. Working in countries from the Federated States of Micronesia to Croatia, we have found dozens of aircraft associated with 250+ MIAs and continue to work with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency to repatriate the missing.
This event is free and open to the public. It is meant for a general audience. If you are an instructor, please announce it to your students.
