St. Mary’s College of Maryland (SMCM) is proud to welcome the return of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO), under the baton of Nicholas Hersh, to the Nancy R. & Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center on Friday, August 1 at 7 p.m. The concert is open to the public, with tickets available under a “Pay-What-You-Wish” arrangement.
The “Sunset Serenades” performance, representing the St. Mary’s County stop under the BSO’s “Music for Maryland” series, marks the return of the orchestra to SMCM under the same series as an August 2023 performance. Featuring harpist Bridget Kibbey, the concert will include dance-inspired works from across Europe by Shostakovich, Tailleferre, Dvořák and Strauss.
“When the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra performed here in August of 2023, their exceptional performance affirmed what we knew when we opened the Dodge Performing Arts Center one year before: that we had something truly special—not just for Southern Maryland, but for audiences and world-class musicians everywhere,” said Keith Hinton, the Dodge Performing Arts Center's executive director. “Hearing the overwhelmingly positive comments from audience members about the BSO's performance and the acoustics in the hall bolstered that belief; the enthusiastic praise from the BSO musicians themselves and their genuine excitement about the experience of performing here confirmed just how extraordinary our venue is. So, you can imagine my pride and joy when the BSO asked to return on August 1 for what promises to be another unforgettable performance in Southern Maryland's premier music venue.”
Tickets are available in advance only online and are going fast. As always, parking is plentiful and free at the Dodge Performing Arts Center. Accessible seating and parking are also available.
Opening in September 2022, the Nancy R. & Norton T. Dodge Performing Arts Center is Southern Maryland’s premier destination for music and the arts, with a 700-seat concert hall and 140-seat recital hall. The recipient of the 2023 AIA Maryland Public Building of the Year Award, the center hosts a variety of musical and performing artists from around the world as well as the College’s student performers and community arts partners.
