Anne Groggel, PhD has accepted a position as the next assistant professor of sociology at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Groggel comes to St. Mary’s College from the nonprofit Legal Services Corporation in Washington, DC, where she has served as a research associate since 2023. The same year she commenced her work at the LSC, Groggel was named an Early Career Fellow of the American Bar Association.
Groggel graduated with her Ph.D. in sociology from Indiana University in 2019. She also holds two master's degrees, one in sociology from Indiana University and a second in social sciences from the University of Chicago. Immediately upon graduating with her doctorate, Groggel joined the regular faculty at North Central College outside of Chicago, Illinois. In 2022, she then accepted a position as a research fellow at the Australian National University. While she enjoys her research, she says that her passion is teaching, and she is looking for a place where she can put down roots that values both research and teaching. We think that she can put down roots in Southern Maryland, and we are grateful that Groggel appears to agree. Groggel will begin her position at St. Mary’s College on August 1 and will teach our research methods and introductory sociology courses in fall 2025.
Groggel's research focuses on gender and the law, with a particular specialization on the law as it pertains to domestic and interpersonal violence. Groggel’s work, however, is wide-ranging, dealing with such things as familial, romantic, and domestic relationships, with particular interest in contemporary courtship rituals involving flirting and flirtatious conversations, and the meaning of consent for sexual encounters.
Since graduating with her doctorate, Groggel has published 12 scholarly articles in prestigious journals such as Qualitative Sociology, Violence Against Women, Social Problems, Social Psychology Quarterly (one of the flagship journals of the American Sociological Association), Socius (the online journal of ASA), and the prestigious Law and Society Review.
The search committee reviewed materials from a strong pool of over 100 candidates, and we selected three accomplished finalists who visited campus in December and January before we ultimately selected Dr. Groggel. We want to thank professors Louis Hicks (sociology) and Kelsey Champagne (history) for serving on the search committee, as well as everyone on campus who contributed to this successful search.
Please join us in welcoming Professor Anne Groggel to St. Mary's College when you get to meet her this fall.
