St. Mary's College of Maryland had a strong presence at Maryland Economic Development Association’s MEDA and PNC Rural Economic Development Session – Southern Maryland Edition. The conference, which was held on December 5th, focused on workforce development, brought together business leaders, MEDA members, and local officials to discuss the unique challenges and opportunities in Southern Maryland.

The theme of the Rural Regional Session was "Future-Ready Workforce: Connecting the Dots in Southern Maryland." Southern Maryland is a dynamic region that balances rich historical traditions with cutting-edge industries and educational innovation. As the economic landscape evolves, workforce development has become a cornerstone of the community’s growth and prosperity. The conference explored how leaders in education, industry, and workforce training are driving impactful change, creating opportunities for individuals and businesses, and ensuring Southern Maryland remains competitive in a global economy.

As the region expands, the demand for a skilled and adaptable workforce increases. The conference aimed to promote collaboration and innovation among key stakeholders, including the business community, educational institutions, and workforce development organizations.

Cindy Greb ‘87, Executive Director for SMCM’s Center for Career and Professional Development, highlighted successful programs at SMCM during the panel on Workforce Development Successes. She stressed the importance of strategic partnerships and private-sector engagement in making these programs successful and sustainable. Cindy discussed the college’s achievements, challenges, and future vision, emphasizing SMCM’s innovative programs and strategies, and the role of collaboration between education and industry in shaping the workforce.

Other SMCM speakers included Chris Abell ‘02, Workforce Development Director at Patuxent Partnership, who participated in the panel on the Implementation of Blueprint, and SMCM student intern Daisha Jones ‘25, who spoke on Panel 4: Insights and Perspectives from Today’s Young Professionals.

SMCM continues to lead in innovation, program development, and support, helping students, the community, and the region thrive.
