This October, the SMCM Relay for Life Club is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Everyone (students, faculty, staff, local community members) is invited to wear pink on 10/24 and join us 11:30-12:30* pm on the Campus Center Patio** for tabling, goodies and bra pong! At 11:50 am folks in pink (or survivors can wear purple) will gather to create a pink ribbon for a group photo.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the United States. It is the 2nd leading cause of death from cancer among women. Only lung cancer kills more women each year. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

Many women with breast cancer have no symptoms. That’s why regular breast cancer screening is so important. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, act now with one of the most important ways to find breast cancer early: get a mammogram

  • Women at average risk for breast cancer start annual screening with mammograms at age 45.

  • Women ages 40 to 44 can choose to begin getting mammograms yearly if they want to.

  • Women should transition to screening every 2 years starting at age 55, but can also choose to continue screening annually.

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member of yours had breast or ovarian cancer. Your doctor can help you decide when and how often to get mammograms.
