The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce works to maintain a favorable climate for St. Mary’s County businesses and not-profits, and enhancing the community. The Chamber is a non-profit organization.
The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce Communication and Outreach Intern
The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce Communication and Outreach Intern will learn to handle office tasks, in addition to outreach to members, managing SMCC social media accounts, building social media campaigns, conducting outreach to businesses and non-profits, presenting new ideas to our team members, and assisting with events and event planning. The Intern may also conduct research on our target audience and market trends to assist in planning new marketing efforts.
Interns will:
- Support staff with ongoing Chamber programs and projects.
- Support the Chamber’s 2024 event planning (eg: State of Schools, Kentucky Derby, 50th Anniversary, etc.)
- Maintain outreach with newsletters, social media, website articles, directories, and supporting correspondence (mail, phone, email).
- Create visually appealing social media, website, and miscellaneous graphics via Canva, Creative Suite, and/or Constant Contact, etc.
Interns are expected to:
- Maintain thorough and tidy records on the Chamber drive (photographs, notes, drafts, reports, etc.).
- Suggest innovative and evidence-based strategies to improve outreach, communication, and engagement.
- Utilize technologies to optimize content creation and distribution.
- Communicate Chamber programs and goals to members and community organizations.
- If time and interest, assist in spotlighting businesses and issues through written content and video/audio.
Description of training and mentoring:
- Interns will be mentored primarily by the Chamber CEO/President and Office Manager on general organizational functioning. No specific training is necessary as the intern will work alongside the Chamber CEO/President and Office Manager until they gain/exhibit enough experience to be prepared to work independently.
Required qualifications:
Essential skills for this position include the following:
- Aptitude with various social media platforms as well as the data tracking tools for platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
- Ability to quickly learn and process information
- Organization and time management skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience in face-to-face communication, engaging audiences on social media, content design skills (information technology, computer science, art, digital art, communications) and/or writing (journalism, news, prose). Experience with event planning and fundraising a plus.
Preferred qualifications: Exceptional skills/ willingness to learn expository writing (i.e., website articles, research-based reports/grant applications) and communication (especially face-to face). We need an individual who is not afraid to meet and get to know business owners and the community of St. Mary’s County. Experience with community organizations and practices (social work, sociology, psychology, business/nonprofit administration, etc.) a plus. Interest and passion in creating positive change for all communities.

St. Mary's County Chamber of Commerce Legislative and Civics Affairs Intern
The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce (SMCC) seeks a dedicated and passionate Legislative and Civics Affairs intern(s) during the next legislative session to provide assistance on key projects necessary to further the goals of the Chamber to support civics education, and a thriving business and community. The SMCC intern will assist staff and the Government Affairs Committee with policy analysis, and external and internal communications. The Intern will assist in the development of a middle school civics education bee. The intern(s) will become familiar with the role the Chamber plays in civics education and non-partisan legislative and policy work.
This internship will offer the opportunity to gain valuable skills, network, and learn about state and local county policy, government affairs, regulation, and legislation on the state government level. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical, writing, investigative, interpersonal, and communicative skills. They should have the ability to multi-task and work as a team player.
This position as a legislative intern provides an excellent opportunity for learning about the interplay between the local community, schools, businesses, and legislators.
Interns may participate in a variety of legislative and administrative tasks including:
- Reviewing and tracking legislation introduced in Annapolis pertaining to local businesses
- Attending legislative and/or local hearings and briefings
- Preparing written and oral summaries of legislative bills pertaining to the local business community for the SMCC Government Affairs Committee
- Assisting staff with content for SMCC social media accounts pertaining to relevant bills and issues
- Working with SMCC staff to prepare and organize materials to submit to key legislators
- Assist in communicating and scheduling meetings with the legislators
- Assisting staff in creating a middle school civics bee competition, including handling logistical elements for program events and outreach to schools, businesses, and non-profits
- Assist with miscellaneous office tasks and projects as needed
Interns will:
The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Affairs and Civics Intern will learn to review Maryland bills that pass through the state legislature during the Annapolis session. The Legislative Affairs and Civics Intern will learn to handle office and tasks such as outreach to members, managing our SMCC social media accounts pertaining to relevant bills and issues, building social media campaigns, conducting outreach to schools, businesses, and non-profits for our Civics Bee, presenting new ideas to our team members, and assisting with Legislative review events and event planning. The Intern may assist staff in creating a middle school civics bee.
Interns are expected to:
- Arrive on time and participate in a variety of business activities, such as:
- Answer phone calls
- Review Maryland State and local bills pertaining to the business community
- Brief Chamber staff and Government Affairs Committee on relevant legislation
- Assist with content for newsletter and eblasts
- Assist with content for relevant social media campaigns
- Attend Chamber public events as possible
Description of training and mentoring:
- The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit, with a mission to connect businesses and non-profits throughout the county.
- Chamber staff will train and mentor interns in reviewing and reporting on pertinent legislative issues
- Chamber staff will train and monitor interns on creating a civics based educational opportunity for all middle school students.
Required qualifications:
