This summer, Peter Orban, class of 2020, will conduct an Undergraduate Research Fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (U.S. Department of Commerce) Physical Measurement Laboratory in Gaithersburg, Md.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is one of the nation's premiere research institutions for the physical and engineering sciences and, as the lead Federal agency for technology transfer, it provides a strong interface between government, industry and academia.

According to Orban, “NIST was my top choice. While there, I will be measuring radioactivity with ionization chambers. A big part of my project will also involve programming in LabView. I am really excited for it!”

During the 11-week internship program, Orban will work with Denis Bergeron, whose current research spans basic radionuclide metrology, standards for nuclear medicine, and the chemistry of (reverse) micellar solutions; and Ryan Fitzgerald, a physicist working in the field of ionizing radiation. Orban is currently a double major in mathematics and physics and hopes to pursue a Ph.D. in either mathematics, physics, or engineering.
