Garrey Dennie (second from left), associate professor of history and a Vincentian historian, along with three other distinguished Vincentian historians, published the first volume of the History of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
In an official handover ceremony, the authors presented the volume, titled “Native Genocide and African Enslavement in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to 1838” to Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves. The event took place earlier in the summer at the University of the West Indies Global Campus in Kingston, Jamaica.
During the event, Dennie read an excerpt from the volume but first emphasized that the work is “Vincentian history written by Vincentians” and that those writing about and reading this history should approach it with both astonishment and reverence.
At St. Mary’s College, Dennie is a founding member and chair of the African and African Diaspora Studies program and chair of the Organizing Committee of the Sacred Journey.
