The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is proud to announce that Associate Professor Kelly Y. Neiles was recently awarded a three-year grant through the National Science Foundation to develop and then implement Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) that use inexpensive and safe paper microfluidic technology in undergraduate chemistry classes.  Professor Neiles will lead four collaborating institutions, Centre College, Virginia Wesleyan University, The College of New Jersey, and Skidmore College, in the use of a backward design curriculum development model to create laboratory experiences specific to chemistry analytics. The backward design model uses a three-step process to develop a more useful and progressive laboratory curriculum that, when implemented, facilitates a more inclusive, intentional, and scaffolded learning plan. Following design and implementation of these CURE laboratories, Professor Neiles and St. Mary’s College student learners will assess how the backward design curricular development model impacted instructors’ implementation of the CUREs, with a focus on assessment of student learning. Congratulations again to Professor Neiles and her fellow collaborators as they embark on this project to advance student learning in chemistry through innovative design.
