The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs is proud to announce that Professor Julie King was recently awarded a grant through the National Park Service/Department of Interior to study the mitigation of shoreline erosion in the George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Previous studies have shown that the Henry Brooks Site within the George Washington Birthplace National Monument has the potential for significant archaeological data. Additionally, investigations identified this site as among the most threatened archaeological sites due to the existence of intact historic features and early colonial artifacts found very close to the edge of the terrain.  To protect this area, the National Park service has funded targeted archeological excavations. These excavations will help refine interpretations of site structure and function and share the potential to provide a wealth of comparative data on the lifeways, subsistence patterns, material culture, and adaptations on the Northern Neck from the Late Archaic Period through the 18th century. With this new award, Professor King will lead a team, to include students, in conducting research to further support this cultural and historic resource protection.
