Misty Frantz and Kate Shirey of the Career Development Center, and Janna Thompson, assistant professor of educational studies, have been selected for a poster presentation at this year’s AAC&U Diversity, Equity, & Student Success Conference. The focus of their presentation is “Academic Credit Given to Career Services Creates Equity” and will explore how building career readiness into the liberal arts curriculum can break boundaries that previously kept underrepresented students from getting the support they needed.

Students need time to explore different possible paths for their futures, but it is hard to reach them when career advising is an optional benefit. Frantz, Shirey, and Thompson will present the data and experiences of students who have participated in piloted career exploration courses at SMCM. In these courses, students have networked with a variety of alumni, refined their professional portfolio, and gained support in applying for experiences that piqued their interest. By the incoming class of 2020, all career exploration classes will be required for students upon graduation.
