Two St. Mary’s College of Maryland alumni are continuing their education in Ireland this fall at  University College Dublin, one of Europe’s leading research intensive universities.

Cody Dorsey ’18 is pursuing a master’s in public policy at UCD and Conner Dorbin ‘18 is pursuing a master’s in cultural policy and arts management.

While at SMCM, Dorsey majored in political science and Dorbin majored in anthropology. Both alums minored in museum studies. Additionally, Dorsey minored in African and  African diaspora studies.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland, I believe, has prepared me for graduate school by exposing me to the importance of diversity and inclusion firsthand,” Dorsey said. “Never did I think that I would be attending an international university that is predominantly white, but because of my experience at St. Mary’s and my involvement with the College’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity initiatives, not only do I feel comfortable attending the University College Dublin, I feel empowered.”

Dorsey said the Career Development Center and the museum studies program played a role in preparing him for his master’s program as they focused on hands-on learning and his program will include a significant practicum portion.

Dorbin is not a stranger to UCD as it was where he spent his semester abroad in fall of 2016. He said SMCM prepared him to be a good student and a successful professional.

“The creative drive of faculty allowed students like myself to expand on their teachings through internships, independent studies, and jobs. The tools and resources are all available to students when attending St. Mary's College, but it is up to the student to take advantage of those opportunities,” he said.

Dorsey said he is looking forward to learning best practices in government efficiency and Dorbin is looking to network and focus his studies into exhibition design, graphic design and marketing, managing creative experiences.

“I want to help those stories come into life and inspire people to change the world.  Cultural and technological innovation represent the future of the museum world,” Dorbin said.
