Assistant Professor of Theater Amy Steiger recently published an article in the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism titled “Paradoxical Sleep and Flights of Imagination: Sleep Rock Thy Brain and the Performance of Research.” Sleep Rock Thy Brain is comprised of three one-act plays commissioned for the 2013 Humana Festival at Actors Theatre of Louisville, inspired by theatrical flying technology and the neuroscience of sleep. Steiger argues that the process served as performance-based research that supplements sleep science with an experiential representation of the situated somatic, emotional and paradoxical elements of scientific research, sleep and dreaming. Steiger was also accepted into a directing intensive on new play development at the Kennedy Center - part of the National New Play Network/MFA Playwrights Workshop, taking place July 28 – Aug. 5. She’ll use the knowledge garnered there while teaching playwriting and directing at SMCM in the fall. Steiger will work with students to develop 10 minute plays for a festival of new student-written work in the Bruce Davis Theater to take place in the spring.
