On April 14, the St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Women in Science House Living and Learning Center (WiSH) hosted Math Girls Day in Schaefer Hall on the College’s campus. Thirty-eight girls from local middle schools attended, enjoyed math games and trivia, ate lunch in the Great Room, and heard about galaxies from guest speaker Erin De Pree, associate professor of physics at St. Mary’s College. WiSH opened in 2006 and is the longest continually run Living Learning Center at St. Mary’s College. It was formed to provide a space for students to create programming that supports women who want to be STEM majors or go into STEM fields. There are currently 15 members. Students who live in WiSH earn educational course credit for their activities. Lindsay Jamieson, associate professor of computer science, and Michelle Milne, assistant professor of physics, are the faculty sponsors of WiSH. Math Girls Day is made possible thanks to the support of Mathnasium, located in California, Md. (http://www.mathnasium.com/californiamd).
