Lecture by John Quinn: Analog Indie Animation

Monday, September 29, 4:45-5:45 p.m., Glendening Annex

Modern digital animation tools are powerful. However, at times they can lack the tactility and nostalgia of analog methods.  Blending the two has proven to be a way of keeping both feeling fresh - from high budget productions to one-person passion projects.  John Quinn, working with both hand-drawn and stop motion, will give a lecture on his work as an independent animator in this space. They will take a look at that in practice and talk about the importance of experimentation in animation.

John Quinn Biography

Under the vague umbrella of "experimental animator", John Quinn works independently making stop-motion and hand-drawn 2D animated films.  Since graduating from the Pratt Institute 2D Animation program in 2024, his thesis film FREE SNAKES has been making the festival rounds while he slowly but surely works on his second short, anxiously trying to avoid a sophomore slump.  Experimentation in both visuals and narrative are important to his work - he believes one influences the other.  A novel visual language can spark an interesting narrative, and an interesting narrative should hopefully spark unique, new visuals.  John Quinn is also a New Hampshire native, currently living as an artist-in-residence at Byrdcliffe Arts Colony in Woodstock, NY, and at the time of writing this has never been to Maryland. Quinn is a visiting artist in the Artist House Residency Program, Department of Art and in addition to this lecture, will visit Professor McDowell's ART 346 Character Animation course.
