Associate Professor of Computer Science

Biography
I love interacting with curious minds and sharing my appreciation for the elegant blend of mathematics, logic, and problem solving that defines computer science. My teaching and research interests include computer graphics, competitive programming, computer science education, and theoretical computer science. More broadly, I enjoy helping students find success and satisfaction in pursuing their passions.
Previously, as a founding faculty member at Habib University, Pakistan’s first liberal arts university, I helped build a distinctive undergraduate Computer Science program rooted in the values of interdisciplinary engagement, social responsibility, and pedagogical excellence. I also held administrative roles including Program Director and Assistant Dean.
To me, teaching is an intellectually engaging problem: how to keep a class rigorous and challenging, yet fun and accessible. My pedagogy is shaped by a commitment to student-centered approaches and a deep appreciation for diversity in the classroom.
I enjoy experiencing new cultures and cuisines and have been fortunate to live, study, and work in four continents. Practicing my German is a personal goal, so I’m always happy if someone drops me a Guten Tag!
Lastly, my name, Waqar, may be unfamiliar to some. Here’s the IPA: /wəˈkɑːr/, if you’d like to pronounce it correctly, and a link to hear it. I’m also perfectly happy if you find a nickname that works for you.
